A report in Forensic Science International: Synergy explored the ethnic and racial diversity of practitioners in the forensic science profession.
The study found varying differences. In forensic science, practitioners tend to be whiter than the American population it serves.
For the study, the following was examined: forensic science literature, demographic data from professional organizations, and demographic surveys.
Researchers not only found a lower representation of Black and Hispanic practitioners in fields related to forensic science but also less minority students as students in the undergraduate level.
According to the findings: “We encourage professional organizations to be transparent about the diversity in their membership and provide actual practitioner demographic statistics.
“These data are beneficial to studying the effects of underrepresentation and developing effective strategies to improve representation.”
