A recent Pew study has found that Christianity is on the decline, with the trend projected to continue in the coming decades.

The authors at the Pew Research Center have noticed a trend of more American adults leaving the Christianity faith since the 1990s. More Americans have modified their religious identity to atheism or nothing in particular.

According to the report, the rate of American adults identified as Christians is anticipated to decrease below 50 percent of the population, with significant fewer believers by 2070.

Chart shows U.S. Christians projected to fall below 50% of population if recent trends continue

“The Center estimates that in 2020, about 64% of Americans, including children, were Christian,” the report states. “People who are religiously unaffiliated, sometimes called religious “nones,” accounted for 30% of the U.S. population. Adherents of all other religions – including Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists – totaled about 6%.”

“These projections indicate the U.S. might be following the path taken over the last 50 years by many countries in Western Europe that had overwhelming Christian majorities in the middle of the 20th century and no longer do.”
