Symptoms: Recurrent episodes of binge eating; Consistent behavior aimed at preventing weight gain (eg. vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative misuse); Preoccupation with self-evaluation of body shape or weight.

Levels of Severity: The following are levels of severity for bulimia nervosa.

  • Mild: 1-3 episodes per week
  • Moderate: 4-7 episodes per week
  • Severe: 8-13 episodes per week
  • Extreme: 14+ episodes per week

Usual Onset: Adolescence, Early Adulthood

Comorbidity: Anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, Kleine-Levin syndrome, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders

Gender Ratio: Women > Men

Treatment:

  • Antidepressants (SSRIs, TCAs)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Interpersonal Psychotherapy
  • Maudsley Family Therapy
